John Legend, Definitive Technology & Magnolia

On February 27, 2014, in Magnolia, by Karl Kozlowski

Singer, songwriter, actor. Some people do it all. Than there are those that do it better than anyone else. You know you’re on top of your game when your stage name is Legend. John Legend, the guy knows music, how to make it, how to sing it, and how best to listen to it. His speaker of choice, Definitive Technology – and that was even before they asked him to be their brand ambassador.

That’s why we’re so excited to have John appearing at our Magnolia Design Center inside the West Hollywood Best Buy store. Not only will Definitive Technology be showing off some of their latest gear, but a select group of fans will get a chance to meet John.

It’s a sweet opportunity to see some awesome gear and meet a nine-time GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artist. It’s also a great opportunity for all of us at Magnolia to show you just how far we’ll go to get you in front of not only great gear, but legendary performers.

Home automation, it’s pretty amazing stuff. Push a single button on your tablet or smartphone and boom, your entire house comes to life, from lights, to blinds, to your home entertainment system, if it can be controlled, home automation can control it. But even with all the amazing things this technology can do, the one thing it does better than anything else is turn your house into a home that’s more comfortable.

Lighting is a great way to bring both ambiance and comfort to a space. If you don’t have a home automation system, you’ve probably spent time adjusting the lights when it’s time to watch a movie. I know I do. I dim the family room lights to a low glimmer, the kitchen lights which are behind the room get turned off, except for the under cabinet lights, which I keep on so I can easily see my way around the room to get snacks. I close all the curtains, turn down the thermostat and turn on the fireplace. But if I had a home automation system, (Savant, Control4, Pro Control, AMX) one push of a button on my smartphone or tablet and all this would happen at once, while my home entertainment system simultaneously came to life. One button and I’d be snuggling up to watch a movie with my family in total comfort.

TiVo and a TV

• Computer, the AQ DragonFly USB DAC and Headphones (the three musketeers)

Receiver and Surround Sound Speakers

• Gazebo and a SunBrite TV

Watch the Winter Games Anywhere, Anytime

On February 12, 2014, in Magnolia, by Karl Kozlowski

There’s a 10-hour time difference between Sochi Russia and where I live, Minneapolis Minnesota, so this years Winter Games events will be happening in the wee hours of the morning or on weekday afternoons. So unless you’re willing to stay up until 2am to watch the US women’s hockey team play Finland, or can take off work to watch an afternoon of luge, you need some options. Here are a few easy suggestions for you to watch the Winter Games anytime, anywhere.

First, the solution for watching the games whenever you want is perhaps a pretty obvious one – get yourself a DVR. Digital Video Recorders, like the Tivo Roamio Pro can record multiple shows at once, up to 6 actually. So now, when multiple NBC channels are showing multiple events at the same time, you won’t miss a thing. And you can then watch what you want, whenever you want. You can even fast-forward through the countries you don’t want to watch doing the ski jump or the bobsled, and just watch the teams that interest you. But perhaps the best part of the Roamio Pro and Plus is that it answers the question of where you watch the action, and the answer isn’t at home on your couch.

The Big Game + the Winter Games = New TV Nirvana

On January 28, 2014, in What's New, by Karl Kozlowski

The Big Game is a great excuse to get a new TV. With friends and family coming over, updating that old set and getting a new bigger, clearer TV with all the latest bells and whistles just makes sense. But, as is true with any big purchase, it’s not always easy to get every member of the family on board, especially when the purchase may seem like it’s only for one event. And while you and I and every TV fan knows that you’ll be using this new set to watch so much more than one game, (you’ve got movies, all the other sports, heck, even the 10 o’clock news looks better on a bigger, clearer TV), others may need more convincing.

Enter the 2014 Winter Games. Yes! Over two weeks of reasons to blow up that old TV and march in with a new one. Hockey, figure skating, curling, skiing, the pageantry and pride of the Winter Games is a great back-up reason (should you need one) to convince anyone that this is the time to upgrade. No longer is it about you and your obsession with football and the once a year holiday that brings everyone together in the battle for the most coveted trophy in all of sports, (and the most coveted air time for advertisers). No, this year, a time that only comes around but once every four years, the Winter Games gives you that bonus reason to lock into your dream TV and bring folks together in the battle for national pride, as the U.S. goes on a gold mining expedition.

This year is like few ever before it, and few that will ever come again, when two great sporting events go back to back at the same time as the electronics world brings you 4K, OLED and Smart TVs, offering you the ultimate opportunity to watch these events like you once only dreamed. This is the year, and now is the time!

Game or Commercials? Either Way, It’s Time To Get Ready

On January 21, 2014, in Magnolia, by Karl Kozlowski

From talking frogs and horses playing football, to all of us saying “Whaazzz UUUpppppp!” for what seemed like forever, the big game isn’t just about the game. So whether you’re a huge football fan, or just like filling the house with friends and watching the commercials, it’s time to gear up. It’s time to match those big hits, big plays and big commercials with an equally awe inspiring home entertainment system.

For me, the Big Game’s never been about just having a bunch of guys get together. (By the way, we call it the “big game” because we legally can’t say the other name, no matter how super the game is, or how bowl-like the stadium may look). The Big Game is all about bringing folks together and having a good time. It’s also a really great excuse to get some new gear. Heck, you spend all this time putting together snacks and drinks and balloons that match each team’s colors, so the last thing you want is everyone squeezing around a 32″ standard definition TV.

Introducing Bang & Olufsen to Magnolia

On December 9, 2013, in What's New At Magnolia, by Karl Kozlowski

I remember the first time I came across a Bang & Olufsen store in a high-end mall in the suburbs of the Twin Cities. The store itself was unique, but the products were straight out of the future. Their clean, fresh lines, unique styles and of course distinctive colors looked nothing like the black-boxed speakers I seemed to find everywhere else. The gear looked almost Sci-Fi, yet contemporary and cool.

The same is true of Bang & Olufsen today. Incredibly vibrant, must see gear that stands out from anything you’ve ever seen before. But unlike those speakers I saw so many years ago, today you can experience this amazing gear inside your nearest Magnolia Design Center. And why not, Magnolia has always had the most unique, cutting edge gear, and with B&O now in the fold, it just adds another strong brand personality into the mix that’s sure to appeal to an entirely new set of audio enthusiasts.

Magnolia will be featuring the PLAY series from B&O, a collection of fun, vibrant, hip headphones and wireless audio products that express all the delight and emotion that B&O is known for. PLAY is the perfect name for this series as it invites the same emotions of interaction and fun that those speakers and TVs drove inside me so many years prior.

So when you’re ready to explore the brand for yourself, read about PLAY in M Magazine, check them out online, or visit any of our Magnolia Design Center locations to experience what this amazing brand is all about.

‘Tis the Season…

On November 26, 2013, in Guides and Gifts, by Karl Kozlowski

Here it is, November. The leaves have changed color and fallen from the trees, and if you live in the Midwest like I do, you’ve already experienced a few snowflakes. I was at the mall this past weekend and enjoyed the holiday music in the stores, the countless decorations and the premature push to move us all into the holiday spirit. So is it too early to get ready for the most wonderful time of the year?

For my two young girls, it definitely is. If I asked them today what they wanted for Christmas, they’d change their minds at least a half dozen times by the end of the week! But there is one gift recipient that shouldn’t be overlooked this time of year – the audio or video connoisseur. I’m not talking about that guy or gal that kind of likes this stuff, I’m talking about that person who absolutely loves this stuff, and has a keen ear and eye for exactly what they want. Why should we consider them now? Simple: because their gift is sure to take a little more time.

First, you can’t just go out and get them any old speaker or TV; they have something much more specific in mind. So unless they’re ahead of the game, and have the name and model number all picked out – you want to be sure to go with them to get this stuff. And while you’re there, give your own two cents. Heck, most of these products are built for family enjoyment and take up some space, so why not have some say? Here’s what you do: come into a Magnolia and have a System Designer show them what we call the “Art of the Demo”. This allows them to try out the finest gear back to back and make an educated decision – not by numbers on a website or specs on a sheet of paper, but by how a speaker actually sounds – because that’s all that really matters, how they, or you, or you both like how it looks and sounds.
